Biography

Matt Harris's career began not behind a camera on set but underwater. More than thirty years ago he took up underwater photography, progressing into technical diving and expeditions to places where access was difficult and stories were largely unseen — including, in 1996, joining the initial technical diving team to explore Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

From those origins he moved into design, commercial filmmaking and documentary production, founding the film and visual-production company Pixelwork in 2002. Over the following decades he built a substantial career as a director and cinematographer across broadcast, advertising and documentary, shooting on everything from underwater rigs to aerial drones. His feature credits include Rom Boys: 40 Years of Rad (2020), a documentary about the fight to save a historic British skatepark, on which he served as director, producer and cinematographer.

In 2026 Harris returned to Bikini Atoll for the first time since the nineties, this time with a full underwater camera system, filming the XX500 scientific expedition investigating life in one of Earth's most extreme environments. His expedition, documentary and brand work is united by the same guiding question: find the real story, find the people, and make an audience care.

Alongside his live-action work he is Creative Director of Unreelated, a London AI production studio built at the intersection of storytelling, technology and generative AI. There he applies decades of filmmaking craft — pacing, tension and visual storytelling — to AI-generated cinematic content for brands, from Matrix-styled internal comms films to cybersecurity trailers built entirely with generative tooling.

‘As AI makes it ever easier to manufacture images and narratives, authenticity becomes the line between genuine filmmakers and those who merely generate content. Real production first, AI when it helps.’ — Matt Harris
